WOLF PULLED UP TO THE 26th precinct where they were holding Cree for questioning. He was met by Carter and his lawyer, Charlie Sharpe. Wolf had met Charlie when he befriended Ace. Charlie was ten years younger than Wolf and back then wore pigtails and glasses too big for her face. She always reminded Wolf of a fairy, and it was odd to see her as a woman who made grown men cry when she was in the courtroom setting.

“Charlie, it’s good to see you.” Wolf reached for her hand and shook it.

“Even better for my wallet. I always thought once the Unhinged Brothers were out of New York I wouldn’t be getting these cases, but it’s now twice I’ve had to get someone bailed out of jail. I know it sucks for you guys, but I will be sending my bill with a smile on my face.”

“They’re releasing him?” Wolf hadn’t realized how worried he actually was until that moment. Cree had done time for dumb shit, they all had, but murder charges were a whole different beast.

Charlie shook her head. “No judge will see us now. Plus, they’re not going to want to give Cree bail because of the connection you guys have with Sofia Barbati. He’s a flight risk, plus his record. I’ll do my best to argue his case, but you want my opinion?” Wolf nodded. He wanted the best, and according to Carter, Charlie was the best, so her opinion mattered.

“If I was on the opposing side, I’d fight to keep him locked up until trial. I would also get your affairs in order and Cree’s. The cop that’s your friend, um, Benetti? He pulled me and Carter aside to give us the heads-up.” Charlie paused, glancing toward Carter before she looked back at Wolf.

Wolf felt it, the rug under his feet getting ready to be pulled out from under him. This wasn’t going to end well for Cree or even himself. “How bad is this going to get?” Wolf braced himself for the blow.

Charlie let out a breath just as Carter’s phone rang. “The witness saw Cree and IDed you and two others moving the body from in front of your casino, and there’s supposed to be a videotape with Cree discarding the body.”

Wolf cursed and scrubbed a hand down his face, already trying to see what he missed about that night. The casino hadn’t been the only establishment that had a dead body delivered. Tres Bellas went up in flames, so Wolf knew there was no proof there since the body had been found inside. Nico and Bebo had their own body dumped in front of their lounge, a hot spot during the warmer nights. It would be almost too easy for a witness to magically appear saying they saw Nico and Bebo’s crew moving the dead body too.

This was a smart move. Wolf could see how this would play out. They were all flight risks with records long enough that the judges already knew their names.
